Australian Mines is collaborating with Amrita Centre for Research and Development's Centre of Excellence in Advanced Materials and Green Technologies to conduct Research on the use of scandium in next-generation nimh batteries and hydrogen storage applications, foreign media reported.
The center, located in Tamil Nadu,India,is evaluating scandium magnesium alloy as a new grade of high-capacity terny-alloy to improve the energy storage capacity of next-generation NiMH batteries for use in the booming global electric vehicle market.
In addition to studying the possibility of using scandium magnesium alloys in mainstream passenger vehicles, the research collaboration also evaluates the hydrogen storage potential of these new nickel metal hydride batteries in order to provide practical solutions to the growing demand for technology that can effectively store large amounts of hydrogen for high-energy applications such as heavy vehicles.
Prior to the signing of the amritar agreement,Australia minerals limited has entered into a partnership with Metalysis,a UK manufacturer of 3d-printed metal powders,to research and develop innovative solid-state processes for the more efficient production of aluminum-scandium alloys used in automotive manufacturing.
"Under the research agreement, the Australian mining company will retain all intellectual property rights arising from the collaboration, regardless of where and by whom the intellectual property rights are created,"said Benjamin Bell, general manager of Australian mining.
Earlier this year, the Australian mining company signed a offtake agreement with battery manufacturer SK Innovation to purchase all cobalt and nickel from the Sconi cobalt-nickel-scandium project in Queensland.
